Activity Day 1

After breakfast, set off toward the Londorosi Gate at West Kilimanjaro. While your guide handles the climbing permits, savor a fresh coffee or tea and soak in the excitement. Then continue along a rugged 4x4 track to the remote starting point of the Lemosho Route. After a light lunch, begin your trek into the dense rainforest, alive with vibrant flora and the calls of exotic wildlife. After 3–4 hours of walking, reach your first camp, tucked among the trees.

Mti Mkubwa Camp

Sleep surrounded by tall trees at Mti Mkubwa Camp. The camp sits at 2650m above sea level and lies along the Lemosho Route that goes up and down the mountain. It's also the nearest camp to Lemosho Gate. Amenities are simple, with shared toilets, but you'll be camped close to plenty of other travelers with whom you can share information, advice and stories.

Day 2

Shira Camp 2

Activity Day 2

Fuel up with breakfast before leaving the forest behind and climbing into open moorland. Today’s trek is a little longer, lasting around 7–8 hours, as you pass through stunning highland scenery across the Shira Plateau. Pause for a scenic picnic lunch before continuing towards Shira Camp 2, where you’ll be treated to a dazzling sunset behind Kilimanjaro’s towering glaciers.

Camp among the rocks and moorlands on the slopes of Mt Kilimanjaro. Located as the third campsite along the Shira and Lemosho routes up and down the mountain, Shira 2 sits at an altitude of 3890m/12,762ft, so is an important step in acclimatizing to the high altitudes. There are no facilities – only cleared areas where you can pitch a tent.

Day 3

Barranco Camp

Activity Day 3

Today is an important acclimatization day. Trek steadily through the rocky Alpine desert towards the striking Lava Tower at 4,630 meters. Spend time at high altitude to help your body adjust before descending into the lush valley of Barranco Camp. The combination of climbing high and sleeping low significantly improves your summit chances.

You can see the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro from Barranco Camp (3983m). It's a stirring backdrop to the campsite, and its high snows are a contrast to the bare, dry landscape that surrounds you here, high above the tree line. Barranco lies along a number of climbing routes, including the popular Machame Route, so there are always lots of people in camp.

Day 4

Karanga Camp

Activity Day 4

After a good night’s rest, face the Barranco Wall—an exciting scramble that’s easier than it looks, rewarded by stunning vistas across the mountain. Upon reaching Karanga Camp, enjoy a hot lunch followed by a relaxing afternoon or take a short acclimatization walk for those with energy to spare.

Landscapes of austere beauty surround you and the oxygen is pretty thin at Karanga Camp, which lies high on Mt Kilimanjaro at an altitude of 3995m. You're well above the treeline here, in a terrain known as an alpine desert. The summit is clearly visible high above you, there's plenty of space to pitch your tent, and there are always many other climbers around with whom to swap stories.

Day 5

Barafu Camp

Activity Day 5

Today’s journey takes you around the southern face of Kilimanjaro, crossing the starkly beautiful Alpine desert. After 3–4 hours of trekking, arrive at Barafu Camp. Spend the afternoon resting, hydrating, and preparing both mentally and physically for your midnight summit attempt.

Barafu Camp, which lies along a number of climbing routes on Mt Kilimanjaro, is at an altitude of 4681m. The name 'barafu' means 'ice' in Swahili, which refers to the cold temperatures that you will encounter here. The views are big and the landscape is bare, and there are always plenty of other climbers camping at Barafu.

Day 6

Summit day - Mweka Camp

Look down on Africa from the highest point on the continent, the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro (5895m). Here from Uhuru Peak, overlooking Kibo crater, the views are almost as wonderful as your sense of achievement for having made it here. Enjoy the glaciers while you can.

Activity Day 6

Summit Day! Begin in the dark, guided by stars and determination. Push onward to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters) just in time for sunrise—a moment that will stay with you forever. After celebrating at the roof of Africa, descend to Barafu for a short rest, then continue to Mweka Camp.

There's always a real sense of excitement at Mweka Camp, which lies at an altitude of 3060m and along four different descent-only routes down off the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro. There's more oxygen here, and everyone enjoys that the most difficult sections of the climb are now behind you. The views in the area are also beautiful.

On your final day, stroll down through the forest, where lush greenery and lively birdlife welcome you back. Upon reaching Mweka Gate, celebrate your success with a festive champagne brunch hosted by Genes Adventures. Afterwards, transfer back to your hotel for a well-deserved shower, rest, and time to relive your incredible journey.
